On Friday, June 2, Madison Square Park Conservancy and the School of Visual Arts will host Madison Square Park’s third annual symposium, exploring the possibilities of public art, featuring prominent artists and leaders in the public art and museum fields.
The most distinguished artists of our time are creating works to be displayed in the public realm, and for Public Art Programs led by directors, curators, and museum professionals from across the country. Artists now have the opportunity to share their material, content, and form in the name of public art. Does access to this kind of work align with its significance? How are artists and art professionals tackling the challenges of siting, intention, interpretation, dialogue, and impact?
The Lineup
Brooke Kamin Rapaport, Director and Martin Friedman Senior Curator of Mad. Sq. Art, will deliver opening remarks. Following the opening remarks, writer Nancy Princenthal will moderate a panel discussion with national leaders in the field: Brooke Davis Anderson, incoming Director, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and former Executive Director, Prospect New Orleans; Melissa Chiu, Director, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Tom Finkelpearl, Commissioner, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; John Hatfield, Executive Director, Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City; and Shamim Momin, Director and Curator, LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division).
Each panelist will discuss how they consider questions of access, available municipal space, and community engagement on the projects they realize, as well as how interpretive strategies differ between projects and sites. An audience question and answer session will follow the panel discussion.
This year’s keynote conversation, to be held after the panel discussion, is with performance poet and scholar Dr. Joshua Bennet, as well as artist Josiah McElheny, whose Prismatic Park will be installed in the Park June 2017. Conversations will be followed by a panel discussion with leading figures in public-art related programs from across the country.
Following the keynote conversation, artist presentations will be led by Simone Leigh, Iván Navarro, and Erwin Redl.
